F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Fashion
One of my lifelong dreams has always been to find five friends and drink coffee at a cafe in New York City multiple times per day. Let me rephrase that—one of my lifelong dreams has always been to find five F.R.I.E.N.D.S and drink coffee at a cafe in New York City known as Central Perk multiple times per day. Personally, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. is the best TV show ever created, and no, I am not just saying that to suck up to Vassar alums (Lisa Kudrow, this post is dedicated to you).
After watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S. for a number of years, I realized that I never completely related to only one of the group of five; I saw myself in multiple characters. I constantly have those “Phoebe moments” during which I find myself singing “Smelly Cat,” or “Monica moments” during which I have urges to clean my dorm room to the point that someone has to sedate me. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. aired between 1994 and 2004, so the fashion featured on the show is a little ancient in terms of the current trends, but you can still dress like your favorite character with today’s fashion. If you are anything like me, who has no one set style, then you can dress like multiple characters.
Rachel Green provides the sex appeal in the show. She dresses classically flirty by not revealing too much, but enough to drive a man crazy. Whenever I think of Rachel, I think of her appearances from earlier seasons, when she often wore outfits with short skirts. Towards the later seasons, Rachel updates her style to a high-class sexy businesswoman. Rachel is not afraid to use her femininity to get her places.
I promise that I’m not sucking up to Kudrow, but Phoebe Buffay’s style is the exact representation of Vassar College. We tend to dress like little kids whose mothers decided to allow their children to choose their own outfits. In other words, we have no problem wearing an outfit with four different kinds of prints. I guess we all lack a sense of matching, which is how I see Phoebe. Colorfully printed maxi dresses are what you should be aiming for when dressing like her.
Monica Geller has a similar style to Rachel but more conservative. She wears consistent colors of red and black usually in a buttoned collared shirt. Monica has a very neat and clean personality, which is seen through her clothing as well.
Whenever Chandler BING comes tom mind, I think of sweater vests. Joey made fun of Chandler numerous times for this piece of attire so I am obviously not going crazy in thinking of it. Sweater vests are not exactly the first item people run to buy at stores but it is fashionable now to dress in a retro style so make vests your next purchase.
Ross Geller usually dresses like an old tenured teacher, the ones that find it okay to constantly refer back to the “olden days”. Just like his sister, he wears clean-cut clothing, which include a nice fitting sweater or casual suits. Honestly, I don’t have much to say about him since he was my least favorite character. I only rooted for him because of Rachel. Sorry, Ross.
Finally, it is time to talk about the hilarious, Joey Tribbiani. He is the type of guy that looks good in anything whether it’s wearing all of Chandler’s clothes or dressing as a cowboy. Joey tends to go the casual route but clearly knows how to dress well for the ladies.
Now it is up to you to pick whom you would like to dress like. Choose wisely because you never know who (ahem Lisa Kudrow ahem) might walk along Vassar campus. Obviously there is no sucking up here, I mean please. Go watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S and hope for a reunion.
